Probing Tools

Probing tools are a set of network diagnostic utilities used to monitor and diagnose connectivity and network performance issues. They help verify the reachability of specific IP addresses or ports using tests such as ping and TCP ping.

These tools are essential for ensuring reliable communication between Customer Edge (CE) devices and defined network targets.

The main purpose of Probing Tools

The main purpose of probing tools is to ensure that the network connection from the CE device to the specified targets is working properly.

When a target fails to report an assigned task, these tools help identify the problem and determine the root cause of the failure by probing the terminal.

Key Features

  • Template Creation: Define reusable templates for probing tasks.
  • Task Assignment: Add tasks and assign templates to them for execution.
  • Task Reporting: Generate detailed reports showing the results of probing tasks.
  • Report Export: Extract and export task reports for further analysis or record-keeping.
  • Troubleshooting Support: Built-in guidance for resolving common probing issues.

Working principle and features of Probing Tools

The working procedure of Probing Tools follows the following steps and features:

Template Creation

First, a Probing Tools Template is created to define the parameters for various network tests.

Task Creation and Assignment

A Task is created using the created template and then it is Assigned to a specific CE device. This task determines which target to probe.

Task Report Generation

Based on the assigned task, a Task Report is generated of the probing results. This report details the connectivity successes and failures.

Exporting a task report

For further analysis or record-keeping, users can export the Task Report file.

Troubleshooting

When probing fails and reports an error, Probing Tools provides diagnostics to identify the network problem.

Typically, the reasons for failure can be:

  • Firewall Blockage: The firewall on the target may be blocking ICMP (Ping) or TCP port traffic.
  • Network Routing Problem: There is a problem with the route between the CE device and the target.
  • Target IP/Port Invalid: The given IP address or port is not available.

In such cases, it is important to check the terminal logs and use the reference to: Probing tools troubleshooting doc
