HA with CE link to two Different PE, PE1 link to CE1, CE2 connect CE1

This document links the Demo-CE to two separate PEs, then links the Apex CE to PE1, and the Apex CE connects to the Demo-CE by routing and networking. The main objective of this setup is to ensure seamless network connectivity and failover capability between the Master node and the Apex CE.

  • This section details the initial configuration of two CE devices and two PE devices: one Demo-CE device, one apex CE device, one PE1 device (sha-test-pe1), and one PE2 device (sha-test-pe2).
    • The Demo-CE device is linked to the sha-test-pe1 (PE1) and sha-test-pe2 (PE2) devices.
    • The Apex CE device is linked to the sha-test-p1 (PE1).

For detailed instructions on how to link your CE to a PE, please refer to the document CE Link to PE.

Configuring Routing for LAN Communication

Once the CEs are connected to their respective PEs, routing must be configured to enable communication between the LANs of the Demp-CE and the Apex CE. By default, these LANs, which will have different IP subnets (i.e., Demp-CE LAN: 172.30.1.0 and Apex CE LAN: 192.168.1.0), will not have direct connectivity. For this, configure static routes on both CEs.

  • On the Demp-CE , add a route to the LAN IP (192.168.1.0/24) of the Apex CE.
  • On the Apex CE, add a route to the LAN IP (172.30.1.0/24) of the Demp-CE.

Additionally, a bridge gateway will be configured to facilitate connectivity between them. For a comprehensive guide on how to implement this routing configuration, please visit the following document: routing configuration.

Verify Connectivity

After configuring the routes, it is extremely important to verify network connectivity between the two CE LANs. This ensures that the routing setup is working as expected.

To verify connectivity:

  • Ping the LAN IP of the Apex CE from the Demp-CE.
  • Ping the LAN IP of the Demp-CE from the Apex CE.

This will confirm that both LANs can reach each other. For detailed instructions on using the ping command and troubleshooting network connectivity, please refer to the routing troubleshooting document.

Testing HA Failover for CEs Connected to Different PEs, and CE2 connect with CE1 and PE1

The HA configuration ensures that when the master node fails, all configurations are transferred to the backup node, and the backup node becomes operational.

  • When the master node goes down, verify that the Demo-CE Link PE setup configured on the master node, which routes networking between the Demp-CE and Apex CE, is all operational on the backup node. The backup node should not be down.

  • Once the backup node is up, verify that it maintains the same connectivity to the Apex CE that the master node had before. This means repeating the connectivity verification steps (pinging the LAN IP) from the backup node to the Apex CE.

This process ensures that the network remains resilient and operational even in the event of a master CE failure.
